Zainab Masood is a character that will be remembered by EastEnders fans for a long time. However, even though the role brought its portrayer, Nina Wadia, immense fame, it also caused a hurdle in her career. The actress and comedian recently opened up about how playing Zainab for six years took over her own identity. Moreover, she admitted that the role temporarily pushed the brakes on her career.
In a recent chat with Loose Women, the ex-EastEnders star admitted that after her stint as Zainab, no casting director wanted to cast her. “No, she’s Zainab,” they would tell her agent. This prevented her from getting any further roles after the BBC soap. Nina shared that she then decided to go into comedy. However, she clarified that she made the decision only because she wanted to refresh her career and not because of any ill feelings toward the soap.

In fact, Nina added that she thoroughly enjoyed being a part of EastEnders. “It was fun, I loved my time on it,” she enthused. However, she proposed that she is one of those actors who constantly feel the need to be experimenting with different things. And perhaps soaps don’t offer that much variety. There comes a point where it feels like the storylines are going nowhere but running in circles.
It’s wonderful, though, that Nina has finally managed to break free of being identified only as Zainab from EastEnders. She recently put forth a stellar performance on Netflix’s The Sandman and Disney’s Live-action movie Aladdin. For the unversed, her other notable performances include Aunty Noor in Citizen Khan and Mrs Hussein in the BBC comedy, Still Open all hours. The fine actress has also received several accolades over the years, including, Best Comedy Performance at the 2009 at The British Soaps Awards,

We wish Nina all the best in all her future endeavors. Meanwhile, you can watch Nina in her new project, Count Abdullah, a horror-comedy that premiered on June 15, 2023, on ITV’s streaming platform.
