Children Of The Whales Season 2: Confirmed Or Canceled? Release Date & Details

The finale of Kujira no Kora wa Sajō ni Utau wasn’t exactly what its fanbase was expecting. Yet, it sure keeps us all hoping for Children Of The Whales Season 2. Sadly, anime producer J.C. Staff is yet to announce the renewal of the sequel. Well, they haven’t canceled the series either, so there’s still hope for it in the future. Will it ever come out? Here’s everything you need to know.

The popular anime series is an adaptation of 2013’s manga series written and illustrated by Abi Umeda. The Children Of The Whales manga series was already a hit, however, its anime adaptation gave its sales a huge boost. Back in October 2017, the television series debut in Japan with 12 episodes that ended in December 2017. Its animation studio released two OVA episodes a while later. The first season was globally distributed by Netflix from March 2018.

Will ‘Children Of The Whales Season 2’ Ever Return?

J.C. Staff has neither renewed Kujira no Kora wa Sajō ni Utau for the second run nor has it canceled the anime. Hence, there’s still hope for its return. Unlike most US television shows, it’s common for anime series to have long gaps between them. Besides, the studio has a good image for creating sequels. Several of J.C. Staff’s deserving shows were given a second and sometimes a third chance as well. Though it has already been more than two and a half years, the future is still bright for this unique animated series.

However, aside from the animation studio, Netflix also has a say in the renewal of the anime. Upon its release on the streamer, the series became an instant hit. Well, its Blu-Ray/DVD sales were affected, yet its success on Netflix compensated every loss. Hence, if the viewership for the first season is enough, the platform may show interest in producing a sequel. Although we expect a big announcement if that happens.

On the other hand, looking at the ending of the first season, it’s clear that the producers wanted to go for a second round. Season 1 had an open end where the Mud Whale escapes its prison in the sea of sand. Moreover, fans are still thinking about the new journey that the Falainians have begun. As far as the story goes, chances are pretty high for Children Of The Whales Season 2.

Is There Enough Source Material For A Sequel?

The Kujira no Kora wa Sajō ni Utau manga series began serialization back in 2013. As of today, a total of sixteen volumes have published. The most recent one debuted in March 2020 and has been in the talks ever since. Due to the current quarantine scenario, previous episodes and manga volumes of Children Of The Whales have become much more valuable for its fanbase. Thus, the demand for a second season has significantly increased.

Anime viewers who do not have access to the manga series are demanding to know what happens next in the story. The first installment of the adaptation covers the plot of the first six volumes. Well, the first seven episodes of the series barely adapt two or three episodes each. Whereas, the rest of the episodes covered a lot more than expected. Fans criticized the pace of the last few episodes of the show and reviewed that Children Of The Whales Season 2 should not make the same mistake.

Hence, the sequel of the popular anime may only cover the next three or four volumes of the manga series. Even so, the animation studio will still have almost ten volumes for future installments. Well, since there’s enough source material for Children Of The Whales Season 2, we hope J.C. Staff waves the green flag soon.
