Citrus is an immensely popular Yuri manga series that rules the decade. It began serialization back in 2012 and till today, has a huge fanbase, both in Japan and internationally. Mangaka Saburouta released ten volumes of the original story and wrapped up the plot back in October 2018. However, the author is keeping her franchise alive with a spin-off manga and possible anime adaptation.

Will Citrus Ever Return?

The January-2018 anime adaptation of the Citrus manga was a real treat for Yuri fans all around the globe. The well-crafted show won the hearts of millions and helped in the promotion of its source material. Citrus anime series ran for twelve episodes and rose to fame halfway through. As a result, sales of the last Citrus manga volume increased, bringing in a massive profit for its publishers. At that moment, it was quite obvious that the series would be getting another season.

However, it’s been two years since then, and Studio Passione is yet to renew Citrus Season 2. One of the most apparent reasons behind the same was Season 1’s low rating. Despite having a heavy fan following, the anime adaptation did not win enough critical acclaim. The debut installment received average to mixed reviews on IMDb and MyAnimeList. Hence, the studio might not have much motivation to bring back a series with a low rating.

Well, Studio Passione is already infamous for not producing sequels of any of its well-deserving show. Henceforth, it’s hard to expect effort from the studio for Citrus. However, as of the current situation of the anime industry, there’s hope for every show with potential. Animation studios have begun to value content and respect the demands of the fans. Hence, several animes, including One-Punch Man and Full Metal Panic, have been revived after years.

Besides, some studios have been picking up shows that had been dumped by parent studios. In fact, there’s a high possibility that the same will happen with Citrus Season 2 as well. On the other hand, author Saburouta has already started the new Citrus spin-off manga. Hence, the new season will now have enough source material to promote.

Citrus Season 2 Has Enough Source Material To Promote?

Most of the anime series are originally produced in order to promote its source material. These anime adaptations can effectively increase the sales of their manga or light novel volumes. Since anime shows take a lot of funds to develop, their producers usually target the sales of the source material as a source of revenue. Henceforth, they do not hesitate to cancel sequels once there’s no content to promote.

Citrus anime adaptation debuted back in January 2018 and ran until April. Sadly, the original manga series concluded with Volume 10 in October 2018. Hence, Citrus Season 2 had no source material to promote. Luckily, mangaka Saburouta finally returned with a new spin-off manga series of the franchise. The first volume of Citrus Plus manga came out in November 2019 and did wonders on its opening days.

Well, Citrus Season 2 will finally have enough source material to promote in the future. The Citrus Plus manga series came as a bright ray of hope for fans of the Yuri anime. As long as the spin-off manga keeps running, the chances for the return of the anime sequel will keep on increasing.

However, as per speculations, the second season of the show will follow the plot of the original manga series. The first season ended with Volume 4 of its source material. Thus, the story of Citrus Season 2 is likely to pick up from the fifth manga volume.

When Will ‘Citrus Season 2’ Release?

As of now, Studio Passione, or any company related to the production of the anime, has not announced the renewal of Citrus Season 2. However, as per the current circumstances, the sequel may not premiere anytime sooner than 2021 or 2022. We will update this section as soon as an official release date arrives.
