Drifters Season 2 sure is one of the most-anticipated anime adaptations of all. It’s been three years since the studio announced the renewal of the second season. However, they haven’t managed to release the entire installment yet. So when can we finally get to watch the new episodes?
Unlike most other productions, the creators of Drifters ordered a second outing of the anime relatively early. However, despite giving an early renewal, the makers are still in the developing stage. They haven’t declared a premiere date yet, and neither do they have a trailer to offer. With every passing day, fans have begun to wonder if the series will ever make it to the screen. However, as per current circumstances, chances for Season 2’s release are pretty likely. Here’s everything to know.
Drifters Season 2: Renewal
Drifters is actually a manga series written and illustrated by Kouta Hirano, that began serializing since 2010. As of today, there are six official volumes of the manga published in Shōnen Gahosha monthly magazine. The 12-episode first season of its anime adaptation debuted back in October 2016 and ran until December 2016. With the twelfth episode, the studio announced the official renewal of Drifters Season 2.
It was announced alongside a message that said, “To be continued Second Season. See you again. Tokyo 20XX. Sayonara.” However, the message helps the creators to alter the release date as per their needs.
On the other hand, by 2017, the makers decided to premiere the first two episodes of the second season as OVAs. After the release of the 13th and 14th episodes, the studio also released Episode 15 of Drifters Season 2. However, all three of them were only released in Japan on DVD and Blu-ray discs only. As of today, there’s no update about when these episodes will broadcast internationally.
Has Production Begun For New Season?
The release of the new installment highly depends upon the production schedule of the studio. Luckily, the creators began working on Drifters Season 2 way back in 2017. Director Kenichi Suzuki confirmed that the episodes from the sequel would start releasing from 2017. While the first three of them have already published as OVAs, the rest of them are yet to hit the screens. However, it is expected that the makers will release all remaining episodes altogether.
As of now, chances suggest that the second installment might currently be in production. However, the lack of content could be affecting the process.
Delay Due To Lack Of Content
The first season of the anime adaptation consumes around four volumes of the manga series. Hence, Drifters Season 2 only has two volumes left to create an entire installment. In fact, the three OVA episodes have already covered almost half the content of Volume 5. Hence, the creators barely have any source material to create a full-length season.
Lack of source material can be one of the major reasons behind the delay of the anime’s result. The makers might currently be waiting for writer Kouta Hirano to create another manga volume. Hence, the installment might premiere as soon as we get Volume 7 of the manga series.
Drifters Season 2: Release Date
Well, the three-year-long delay in the release of Drifters Season 2 sure is disheartening and worrisome for a lot of fans. However, it’s important to understand that some animes take a lot of time to develop as compared to most of the US television shows. Since the studio has already announced the renewal, there’s almost nothing to worry about. As of now, the installment may take a while to return to the screen. Besides, if we are also waiting for another manga volume, the new anime episodes may not premiere anytime sooner than 2021.
