Fans outside of Japan and China had been waiting for the second season of their favorite anime. Now that Season 2 has premiered on Netflix, it’s finally time to ask whether Hi Score Girl Season 3 will release or not. Fortunately, chances for the return of the series are pretty high. Back in 2010, author Rensuke Oshikiri launched the Hi Score Girl manga series in Square Enix’s Monthly Big Gangan magazine. The manga took no time to become a hit amongst otakus and is considered one of the best romantic comedies of the decade. After its eight-year run and ten tankōbon volumes, mangaka Oshikiri decided to wrap up the series in 2018. In the same year, J.C. Staff aired an anime adaptation that became a fan favorite as well. A second season came out in October 2019 for the Japanese (and Chinese) audience. Netflix aired the first installment internationally from December 2018, while Season 2 came out on April 9, 2020.
Hi Score Girl Season 2: Review
Although the anime had already released back in October 2019, only the Japanese and Chinese got the chance to watch it. Luckily, Netflix finally released the latest episodes for Hi Score Girl fanbase from all around the globe. As of now, the sequel has received positive reviews from viewers and critics alike. A large section of the audience believes that Hi Score Girl Season 2 is as good as the debut installment. However, several of its fans say that the anime is much better this time than ever before. The sequel of the romantic comedy anime has improved several aspects of its storytelling. The new episodes explored the personality and background of characters other than Harou (lead character) this time. In fact, Hi Score Girl Season 2 puts much focus on Akira and Koharu than last time. Both of the female leads now have prominent roles to play and become the standouts of the entire series. The relationship between Harou and Akira has also grown over time and is one of the most heartwarming aspects of the story. Hi Score Girl Season 3: Renewal
Now that the second season is available to stream internationally, the demand for a third installment has increased significantly. Viewers are eager to know what happens after the crazy finale episode. However, J.C. Staff is yet to announce the renewal of Hi Score Girl Season 3. Well, it’s apparently way too early to expect a green flag as of now. Unlike most US TV shows, anime series take quite some time to return for sequels. Hence, they’re usually not renewed for months after a season’s release. Animation studios take time to assess the popularity and productivity of the installment, which takes at least a couple of months.
Besides, Hi Score Girl manga had already ended back in 2018. The anime adaptation does not have any new source material to promote as of now. As per possibilities, Season 2 was only greenlit to promote the latest spinoff manga series, Hi Score Girl DASH. Hence, the renewal of Hi Score Girl Season 3 may depend upon the sales of the first two volumes of the spinoff manga. Looking at the popularity of the franchise, there’s still hope for the anime’s return. The second season is already famous amongst the masses in Japan and internationally as well. Is There Enough Source Material?
The Hi Score Girl manga series consists of a total of ten tankōbon volumes. Out of these, the debut season of the anime adaptation used the first four volumes. In late 2018, J.C. Staff also released three OVA episodes of the series, which covered a large section of the fifth volume. However, while the first installment has 15 episodes, Hi Score Girl Season 2 has a short run of 9 episodes. This suggests that the sequel covered much less source material this time.
Therefore, there might still be two or three volumes left to be covered in Hi Score Girl Season 3. If that’s not enough, J.C. Staff may also use some content from the already popular Hi Score Girl DASH manga series. Since the spinoff manga is still in the run, the studio might not fell short of source material to create more episodes.
Hi Score Girl Season 3: Release Date
As of now, the popular anime studio is yet to renew the third season. Besides, it’s currently too early to ask for a release date. However, as per the previous release pattern, Hi Score Girl Season 3 may debut sometime around late-2020 or early-2021. We will update this section as soon as the premiere date and trailer arrive.
