In the long list of places where Baylens tics fire off, the airport tops the list. The 22-year-old reality TLC star of Baylen Out Loud has Tourette’s syndrome, diagnosed at 18. The condition causes her to have involuntary vocal and motor tics every single day. Stress, excitement, and busy environments make her tics worse.
Baylen’s Tourette’s go really bad when she has to go to the airport. Often overwhelmed by all the people, the movement, and airport queues trigger her tics, causing her to say random things. Her dog, Fluffy, helps her calm down significantly. Now, she has found a better way to get through the airport, without firing off her tics so much or offending anyone with them. What does Baylen do to make airports easier? Keep reading to find out more.
Baylen Out Loud star Baylen Dupree got real about her Tourette’s journey on the Howie Mandel Does Stuff podcast. Before COVID, her tics were mild. Then the pandemic hit, and everything changed. Her symptoms got way worse. She knew she needed help. But when she saw a neurologist, things didn’t go as hoped. The doctor basically dismissed her and told her she could not live her life normally. He even retracted his diagnosis.
Even after the heartbreaking diagnosis, Baylen didn’t quit. She told her mom through tears that she was still going to college no matter what. That pushed her to the Mayo Clinic, where doctors finally confirmed her Tourette’s diagnosis. That changed everything. Today, she has her own TLC show, millions of fans, and a story that gives real hope to anyone fighting through Tourette’s.
Baylen Dupree’s tics are a huge part of what makes Baylen Out Loud so raw and real. She has both motor and vocal tics, and she also has coprolalia – an involuntary condition where she blurts out obscene or offensive words and phrases. It’s one of the rarer symptoms of Tourette’s, but it shows up constantly throughout the show. Baylen’s tics are exacerbated by stress and her environment. In the past, quiet places like libraries also triggered her tics.
Airports are one of Baylen’s biggest tic triggers. The crowds, noise, and chaos send her tics into overdrive. In this clip alone, she blurts out “I have a gun” and “bald bitch” – totally involuntary, but obviously terrifying in an airport setting. However, getting through airports used to be a nightmare, but disability assistance has been a real game-changer for her. It helps her skip the overwhelming queues and crowded areas, which tremendously eases her tics. In addition to choosing disability assistance to help with her tics, Baylen also brings her dog, Fluffy, along for support.
Fluffy’s calmness significantly helps her with her tics. Malls, too, are big triggers for Baylen’s tics. In a recent visit to the mall to meet Santa, she had an inappropriate tic for him. Thankfully, meeting Santa face-to-face calmed her down, and her tics didn’t go off. With more therapy and a better understanding of Tourette’s, she is also finding ways to delay her tics in public, which is a huge win in her book.
