Waiting for any Black Mirror season has always been difficult. However, given that we’ve been in a year as dark as the show’s theme, fans can’t help but think about Black Mirror Season 6. When asked about the sequel, creator Charlie Brooker teased that the ‘Reality’ is the next season of the popular black comedy. Moreover, he then announced a Netflix Special, which seems to have some interesting connections with his most famous project. So will there be another season of the critically-acclaimed sci-fi series? When will it come out? Here’s everything you need to know.
Charlie Brooker first launched his masterpiece only in the United Kingdom, on the British television network Channel 4. However, the 2011 series did not gain much recognition until Netflix picked it up for international release in 2015. The satirical comedy won plenty of awards and positive critical reviews following its debut on the popular streamer. Even today, after running for five successful seasons and a standalone film, Black Mirror is amongst the best shows of its kind.
Black Mirror Season 6: Renewed Or Canceled?
Will it not release on Netflix anymore?
Black Mirror’s future is still shiny. The creators of the show have given us many successful seasons already. However, despite its popularity, the series might not return to Netflix anytime soon. As reported by ScreenRant, Charlie Brooker and his co-executive producer Annabel Jones have officially exited the production company House Of Tomorrow. However, House Of Tomorrow is a division of the larger company Endemol Shine, which holds and controls Black Mirror’s rights.
On the other hand, Endemol Shine was later purchased by Banijay Group, which further transfers the show’s rights. However, to fans’ relief, Banijay executive Cathy Payne showed interest in continuing a relationship with Netflix for Black Mirror Season 6 and all its further seasons. Seemingly, this deal won’t come cheap for the streaming giant. If Netflix fails to grab the deal, the black comedy series might have to find another platform for future installments. As of now, either side is yet to confirm whether or not they will produce the show.
New Netflix Special ‘Death To 2020’
Netflix has finally released the much-awaited mockumentary by Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker. Well, officially, the new Netflix Special is not related to the 2011 anthology series. However, from its first teaser
Netflix released the official trailer and some glimpses into the new project, which further increased fans’ doubts. Like Black Mirror, Death To 2020 is a dark and satirical comedy. However, the mockumentary discusses some major events of this year, including the Coronavirus pandemic and the U.S. presidential election. It was finally released around the world on December 27, 2020. As of now, critics have mostly disliked the Netflix Special, while many fans seem to enjoy the watch.
Well, now that the mockumentary has been released, Brooker might pick up the highly anticipated Black Mirror Season 6. However, the acclaimed creator previously decided to hold off on the sequel considering society’s current state. He also mentioned that he was instead revisiting his comedy writing. Well, now that 2021 is almost here, we hope the creator reevaluated his decision. Keep an eye on this corner for all future updates.
Black Mirror Season 6: Release Date
Most seasons of the anthology series usually take around a year (sometimes more) to return. Since the fifth season came out in June 2019, fans have been waiting for well over a year. However, given the things that happened this year, the delay is pretty understandable. As of now, none of the companies related to the show’s production have greenlit another season. Hence, even if the renewal comes right away, Black Mirror Season 6 might not hit the screens before late 2021 or early 2022.
