Coronation Street Star Reveals A Strategy To Recover From Falling Viewership
Coronation Street star Maureen Lipman (Evelyn Plummer) uncovers the best way possible to save the show’s decreasing viewing numbers. According to reports, Corrie’s ITV following has decreased considerably. It’s because most of the fans prefer online platforms like ITX.
Maureen has been playing her character since 2018. She entered Coronation Street as Tyrone Dobbs’s abandoned grandmother. Since then, she has been a part of some of the big storylines, including her current romance with Roy Cropper. Recently, the soap star asserted that the show needs to stop over using ‘sensationalist storylines’ to keep the audience hooked.
In Beyond the Title podcast, Lipman stated, “We’ve come to a point in Coronation Street now where people are getting murdered in knicker factories; we’re having domestic abuse.” In her words, any 21st-century social problem becomes the local soap. Nonetheless, she recalled that the older days were different.
The actress shared that she inherited the shows from her late husband, Jack Rosenthal. Reason being, he wrote the first 130 episodes of Coronation Street. Lipman said, “Back then, you had the freedom to put Martha, Minnie, and Ena in the snug and have a conversation about Ben-Hur.”
According to her, it’s never been political, but I always like it when the women sit down and go, ‘Ooh, Donald Trump, ain’t his hair shocking.’ Additionally, Maureen revealed that she will stay in Coronation Street for a bit longer.
Mentioning her regular breaks from the soap, she expressed, “It’s a good enough job, it’s a little hard – there’s good, and there’s bad, but it’s a nice group of people, it’s nice being up North.” For more Coronation Street spoilers and updates, keep checking TV Season & Spoilers!
