General Hospital: Everything To Know About Epiphany’s Exit

General Hospital star Sonya Eddy heartbreakingly passed away on December 19, 2022. She was famously known for her characters of head nurse Epiphany on General Hospital. Her character was just as loved as she was as a person. Thus, her passing came as a huge shock. Fans and co-stars mourned her loss with a very heavy heart. This led to the makers of the ABC to make a very difficult decision. They had to decide what they were going to do with Epiphany’s character since Sonya had passed over to a new adventure in another world.

Actress Sonya Eddy started playing the character of Epiphany Johnson in 2006 on General Hospital. She continued to remain an integral part of the soap right till the end of her time. Epiphany had first stepped in as a replacement for Audrey Hardy as the head nurse. She became an instant hit with the fans as well as the cast and crew from the very beginning. Over the years, Epiphany has gone through a lot on the ABC soap. At one point, it was revealed that her son, Stan Johnson, was working as a computer expert for Carly.

Epiphany hated the idea of her son working for the mob on General Hospital. However, all her efforts of dissuading him went in vain. Soon after that, while on a call with him, she heard him die in a bomb blast. She suffered a heart attack upon receiving her son’s ashes. Thankfully, the doctors were able to revive her, and she survived the massive personal setback. She even lent her medical support outside of the hospital whenever it was required.

The Legacy Of Epiphany On General Hospital

In 2015, Epiphany helped Sonny recover from a gunshot wound on General Hospital. The handsome don was left paralyzed as a result of his injuries. However, Epiphany did not let him lose hope and give up on himself. She helped him make a full recovery and return to his life with a bang. Over the years, Epiphany has also remained a huge part of the Nurses Ball. Her performances have always lit up the stage of the grand event on General Hospital.

Thus, it really aches to not have Epiphany for the Nurses Ball this year. General Hospital is celebrating its glorious 60th anniversary and is planning a glamorous event for it in form of the Nurses Ball. However, just because Epiphany (Sonya Eddy) is not here that does not mean she will be forgotten. The makers have planned a special episode for celebrating Sonya Eddy as Epiphany. GH’s executive producer, Frank Valentini, told Soap Opera Digest that there is no way they would recast Epiphany. And she loved Port Charles so much that it would not be a good idea to write her off as moved away.

Thus, the makers came to the conclusion that they need to honor not just Sonya but also Epiphany on General Hospital. Hence, there will be a full episode dedicated to her tribute. It is really heartening to see that the soap cares so deeply for its cast and characters. We will forever remember Sonya Eddy as Epiphany Johnson, the head nurse of General Hospital.
