The star had a history of sexual assault and had lived in foster care. Her weight gain began when she turned to food for comfort.

The star needed to drop 50lbs to qualify for the bariatric surgery. She also had asthma and lymphedema, making it impossible for her to function. When Dr. Now met her after some time, he learned she didn’t lose weight. In fact, she had suffered more health problems with respiratory failure. By the end of her episode, Shakiya had only lost 21 lbs and could not have the surgery.

Fans saw her leave the show without the bariatric surgery as she couldn’t reach the target weight. But she did promise Dr. Now that she would return after losing weight.
