The heartfelt interaction of Prince Harry during his recent engagement echoed the compassion of his late mother, Princess Diana. During his trip to Nigeria with his wife Meghan, Prince Harry visited the Nigerian Army Reference Hospital Kaduna alone. Harry was a former British Armed Forces captain and founding patron of the Invictus Games. The royal showed empathy by holding the hand of a young man in a move that channelled his mother, Princess Diana.

Prince Harry held the hand of Private Habu Sadiq, who was recovering from impaired eyesight due to a blast. The royal asked at his bedside, “Are they helping you? Are you feeling better?” Soon, he told the man to get better and stronger. Moreover, the Duke of Sussex also took time to visit other patients in the hospital. The gesture was reminiscent of Princess Diana’s hands-on approach with hospital patients.
The late Princess was famous for her genuine connection with people and her efforts to raise awareness about important causes. These included HIV/AIDS and landmines. “She was not really a gloves person. She was very real and very about human contact,” recounted Charles Spencer. During his visit, the royal interacted with around fifty soldiers, many of whom were recovering from injuries sustained in conflicts.
They have suffered gunshot wounds and attacks by Boko Haram. Furthermore, Prince Harry offered encouragement and expressed his belief in their recovery. “You are going to get better; get back on your feet.” Harry’s visit to Nigeria comes after the U.K. one to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games. The ongoing trip with Meghan is their first international tour since stepping back from their royal roles in 2020.
The Chief of Defense Staff extended an invitation to the Sussexes, highlighting the significance of their visit to the country’s military. Apart from visiting the hospital, the royal pair expanded their tie-up with the GEANCO Foundation during a visit to the Lightway Academy. Their Archewell Foundation will now provide mental health resources and training for young men and women in Nigeria.
