Suddenly Amish is showcasing what it takes for an outsider to dive deep into the world where there is no modern comfort present. During their very first night living among an Amish community in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the six outsiders got to experience that issue. Most of them were left exhausted and frustrated after they couldn’t sleep.
With no electricity, no fans, and no air conditioning, they had to learn to live in the hot weather conditions. Many of the cast members started complaining immediately as they then had to wake up early and start living their Amish life. Could the group truly adapt to Amish life? Or would the lack of basic comforts break them early on? Keep on reading to know more.

Suddenly Amish focuses on six Americans who voluntarily leave behind their modern lives to move into an Amish community in Pennsylvania. Matt is a divorced father from Texas, and he is hoping to find some spiritual grounding and a fresh start. Kendra is a former dancer and content creator from California. She wants to overcome body image issues and reconnect with finding a purpose for herself. Aaron is a 40-year-old pastor’s son from Michigan who feels some sort of connection to the Amish community.
But he has a hearing disability and highly depends on modern technology. Judah is the youngest participant at 22. He is a rapper from Missouri who has been used to luxury but feels like he wants to know where he belongs in this world. He also has germophobia, which makes it hard for him to live on farms. Esme is from Texas, who is looking for stability and traditional family values, but has her own struggles with identity. Billie Jo is from New York and is a longtime admirer of Amish culture.
Suddenly Amish wasted no time in showing how difficult the lifestyle could be for the cast members. On their first night, the cast got to know that their Amish homes had no electricity. This also meant no air conditioning despite the hot temperature. As the night grew warmer, the participants in this experiment couldn’t sleep. Billie Jo admitted that the heat affected her the most.
She explained that her physique made it harder to handle the hot conditions and described the experience as overwhelming. James was introduced as one of the Amish hosts who was handling the group. He told them that the body eventually adjusts if they stay here long enough. Aaron also struggled because of the weather and couldn’t sleep. He admitted that he is “weak” when it comes to heat and even hoped he could bring an air conditioner, so that he could get some rest.
Many cast members also complained that flies kept them awake. Things got worse when community members woke them at 4 a.m. to start daily chores. The caretakers also explained how the cast members would work. They revealed that the men would work in the fields and care for livestock, while women would handle housework, laundry, and cleaning.
