Crunchyroll

The God Of High School turned out to be one of the only good things that happened in 2020. The anime kept millions of otakus entertained and opened a way for manhwa adaptations in the anime industry. However, despite its popularity, Studio MAPPA is yet to renew the anime for another run. With every passing day, the demand for The God Of High School Season 2 is going out of hand. Will it ever release? What’s in the future of this martial arts anime? Here are all the answers you need.

Author Yongje Park’s The God Of High School is a manhwa series (South Korean manga) released as a webtoon. It began serialization on popular webtoon platform Naver Webtoon back in April 2011. With almost 500 chapters (six volumes/episodes) already released, the manhwa is still in the run. Recently, Studio MAPPA picked up the story for an anime adaptation. The 2020 Crunchyroll Original anime debuted back in July 2020 and aired until September 2020.

The God Of High School Season 2: Renewal Updates

The God of High School, also known as GOHS, is the second South Korean manhwa series/Naver Webtoon adapted as anime by Crunchyroll. Upon release, it became one of the top Crunchyroll anime this year. Moreover, both critics and audiences appreciated the fan-favorite anime. Overall, the 13-episode series became a commercial success for its producers and streamers. Yet, neither MAPPA nor Crunchyroll have talked about a sequel.

Well, it is currently way too early to expect a renewal. Unlike most US television shows, anime can take years to receive renewal. As a result, they eventually have long gaps between installments. Several well-known anime series like One-Punch Man, Attack On Titan, and Psycho-Pass returned after four to five-year-long hiatuses. Hence, it’s common for anime to get late renewals. Likewise, Studio MAPPA might not confirm the return of The God Of High School Season 2 anytime soon. Yet, chances for its comeback are still pretty high.

On the other hand, in Season 1’s finale episode, the studio teased what could happen in the new season. This suggests that the producers have already prepared for more episodes. Hence, even though there’s no official renewal, there is still hope for GOHS Season 2. The anime already has a massive following asking for renewal. With every passing day, the demands are increasing, and it will likely get difficult for MAPPA/Crunchyroll to ignore them. Keep an eye on this corner for future updates.

Is There Enough Source Material For GOHS Season 2?

Well, like anime that are adapted from Japanese mangas or light novels, manhwa adaptations are also dependant upon their source material. In this case, Studio MAPPA has more than enough source material for adaptation. The GOHS manhwa series has been serialized for almost 500 chapters already. These chapters are comprised of six story-arcs until now. According to speculations, the sixth arc is probably the final one, and readers will soon bid their goodbyes to the popular manhwa.

Out of the six story-arcs (volumes/episodes), the first season only adapted the first two, which contained 112 chapters. Hence, The God Of High School Season 2 will begin its story with some remaining chapters from the second arc (Chapter 113 to 118). Later on, it will also adapt the third arc called Adventure, which includes Chapter 119 through 175. Well, looking at the number of chapters, the second season would cover nearly half the content Season 1’s did. Most importantly, even after the second season, MAPPA will still have enough content for future seasons.

What Will Happen In The New Season?

The Crunchyroll Original anime centers around a 17-year-old martial artist Jin Mo-Ri from Seoul, South Korea. A tournament which is sponsored by a mysterious organization intends to select martial artists who will be taking part in an even bigger tournament. Hence, martial artists and skilled warriors from all across the globe, including Mo-Ri, are invited to the competition called The God Of High School. However, nobody knows much about the organization and the shady tournament they are organizing.

Speculations say that The God Of High School Season 2 will focus more upon Mori’s adoptive grandfather Jin Taejin and the history of Mori’s birth. In Taejin’s story, viewers will get to know how he masters an entirely new martial arts style from a North Korean soldier captured by the South Korean government. In the past, Taejin and his men head to North Korea for the investigation of strange energy reading coming from there. They then come across some North Koreans hiding something inside their tunnels.

Upon inspecting the tunnels, they encounter a mighty gorilla-like creature. Upon losing the battle with Taejin and his men, the creature gives him a crystal. Apparently, the crystal contains Jin Mori, and that explains how he came into existence. Taejin will likely be in focus this season, as his disappearance was Mori’s primary motivation to enter The God Of High School tournament. We will update this section with more The God Of High School Season 2 plot details when possible.

The God Of High School Season 2: Release Date

It hasn’t been long since the first season ended. Hence, Studio MAPPA might take a while to renew a sequel. Once they greenlight it, the productions for GOHS Season 2 might go on for a year or more. Well, as compared to other shows, anime series take longer to release because animation is an intricate art. However, Studio Mappa already has a busy schedule for 2021, with new anime adaptations including Heion Sedai no Idaten-tachi and Chainsaw Man. It is also speculated that the studio will work on Yuri!!! On Ice the Movie: Ice Adolescence alongside the Yasuke ONA.

Even though the popular studio releases plenty of projects each year, the chances for a GOHS sequel to release in 2021 are meager. Well, even if the renewal comes right away, The God Of High School Season 2 may not hit the screens anytime before late 2022 or early 2023. This article will be updated with an official release date as soon as MAPPA and Crunchyroll confirm it.
