TLC is famous for its controversial shows. However, these days it’s getting renowned for its controversial casts. One might remember the show, Unexpected. Many compared it to MTV’s Teen Mom at the time. But it proved them wrong as it intricately documented the challenges and hardships of early motherhood rather than teen mother drama.
This show also featured various personalities who would go on to become some of the most controversial figures. That’s precisely what went down with Unexpected star, Anthony Vanelli. Vanelli’s frequent run-ins with the law have made him infamous over the years. His criminal activities had caused an enormous uproar at the time. His karma is seemingly catching upto him. The court recently sentenced him for stabbing.

Authorities had previously arrested Unexpected’s alum Anthony Vanelli for stabbing his mother’s boyfriend, over and over. Since his arrest, his attorney had filed a motion. He had duly filed for a mental competency examination for the teen dad. His prior run-ins with the law weren’t at all helpful to his case. Apparently, it took place on April 28 for an “examination” of his “mental competence” to determine whether he could stand trial.
The motion stated that Vanelli acted out because he was suffering from several mental illnesses, including bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Moreover, his mother also came to his support. The professional evaluation indeed confirmed the motion’s claims. This led to his admission to the Department of Children and Family Services for further treatment. However, in November this year, a facility representative reported that the patient was finally “competent.”
Anthony Vanelli had created a massive uproar in the last few years. He first rose to fame when he appeared on TLC’s Unexpected Season 3 with his girlfriend, Rilah Ferrer. The show documented their early parenthood with their daughter, Malayah. However, their relationship soon turned bitter as he gradually showed his true face.

They broke up when authorities arrested Vanelli for his domestic violence against Rilah. Since then, he has had various run-ins with the law. Police had apprehended him three times in the past on multiple charges. Those charges included charges of aggravated assault, tampering with an electronic monitoring device, etc. However, his stabbing incident left the public speechless.
He had stabbed his mother’s boyfriend multiple times over a single confrontation. After a professional evaluation, the judge deemed him incompetent to stand trial. The terms required him to undergo a dual-diagnosis inpatient treatment program. Recently, a representative from the facility reported that the defendant was finally competent and in sound mind to stand trial.
Therefore, in addition to his prison sentence, the judge had ordered him to two years of community control. It will be followed by three years of probation. The court had previously found him guilty and sentenced him to 16 months in prison. However, his motion stating his “incompetency to stand trial” changed the course of the case.
