Before appearing in Dangerously Obese, Ty was dealing with high blood pressure and obesity. In an interview with PARADE, the star mentioned that he has always been the biggest kid in his class. His weight also made him a target for bullies in middle school, which left him mentally scarred. He also couldn’t fit in with kids his age or play with them.

Ty consulted Dr. Procter to help with his weight. He was tired of hiding and letting the weight control his life. Dr. Procter advised Ty to lose 50 pounds in a month before they could talk about surgery. Even though binge eating used to set him back, he eventually reached his goal. He was ready to make a mental change in his life.

Ty Griffin made multiple major changes in his lifestyle. On Dangerously Obese, Sedentary life, binge eating, and improper diet plans were the causes of obesity. With dedication and the help of Dr. Procter, he underwent surgery, and in 10 months, he lost over 235 pounds. His motivation to make life better grew as his new goal was set to reach 200 pounds. Since his surgery in 2022, he has shed over 300 pounds.

Ty had previously mentioned how he could not embrace his sexuality as he lacked confidence. The weight loss journey boosted his self-esteem and confidence, and he openly embraced his identity. He wanted to try drag but lacked the confidence. However, on his weight loss journey, he also came to embrace this aspect of his identity. As an openly gay man growing up in Blackshear, Georgia, it was difficult to attend church or practice faith.

Ty found an LGBTQIA friendly church that allowed him to practice his faith without feeling ashamed of who he is. This also played a big part in his transformation journey. Behind the screen, Ty Griffin not only amazed fans with his new look but also flourished in his career. He was previously working full-time in a loan and tax office. In December 2024, he started his career at America’s Car-Mart as a General Manager. Even though he has his Instagram set to private, he updates followers about his life on Facebook.

Ty has also found love. He met his boyfriend, Chandler Layne, on Facebook and has been inseparable since. In 2025, they have celebrated almost two years of togetherness. Griffin often posts photos of them together on the platform, whether it’s spending time with their families or taking long drives together.
