Perry Mason Season 2: Will Season 2 Return This Year? Production Status And More

HBO

HBO’s one of the most captivating shows, Perry Mason is again returning with Emmy award-winner Matthew Rhys for Perry Mason Season 2. However, some characters’ faith is still in limbo, including the church preacher Sister Alice. Well, the first season ended on a mysterious note. Though it wrapped up Sister Alice and her church’s story arc, it still didn’t explain her whereabouts. Will she returns? Let’s see!

Inspired by Erle Stanley Gardner novels, Perry Mason is a crime thriller drama series on HBO. It recreated the CBS’ popular and long-running series starring Matthey Rhys as the down-and-out private investigator. He’s struggling with the aftermath of the Great War and a failed marriage when he suddenly hired into a young child’s missing case, which changed his life.

When HBO first revealed that it’s working on the new Perry Mason series, it called that Perry Mason would be a limited series. But soon, the press materials before the show’s debut hinted that the series might be the long-running series on HBO. When season 1 was still airing, the network ordered another batch of fresh episodes for Perry Mason Season 2 in July 2020.

HBO EVP Praised The Cast

In an interview, Executive Vice President of HBO, Francesca Orsi, praised the cast and called it an exciting journey with them. He added the show allowed the viewers to travel back to 1930s Los Angeles each week, and every time it thrilled them with such a plot. Even the show has gained millions of viewership within a few weeks, making it highly profitable for the network. So there’s no surprise that HBO renewed it in the midway of the first season.

Filmmaker Seems Optimistic For The Next Run

Shortly after the renewal news, the series filmmaker Tim Van Patten showed his excitement for the next run. He said Perry Mason went through the entire journey where anything could happen either he could never return or fall. But he’s excited to see the love that Perry Mason received, and now they can continue his journey.

Perry Mason Season 2: Who Will Be In The Cast?

As of now, we haven’t received any information about the second season cast. But one thing we indeed know that Matthew Rhys will return as the titular character. Besides him, Juliet Rylance will return as well as Della Street. We can also count on Chris Chalk returning as Paul Drake. Since both, Paul and Della appeared in significant parts of Erle Stanley Gardner’s literary works.

We even know that Justin Kirk as Assistant DA Hamilton Burger and Eric Lange as Detective Gene Holcombe have been upped as the series regulars for the next run. However, John Lithgow won’t return as Elias Birchard “E.B.” Jonathan as he died in the middle of the first season unless the show uses some of his flashbacks in the following season.

Will Tatiana Maslany Return?

Emmy award-winner Tatiana, who played Sister Alice, won’t return for the next run as she fled from the church in the final moments. While speaking to Collider back in August, Tatiana said her story concluded in the finale. However, Matthey soon suggested that Sister Alice would be welcome in the next season. On which, executive producer Susan Downey said Tatiana’s Sister Alice’s decision would depend on the upcoming storyline.

Perry Mason Season 2: Has Production Begun?

As of now, it’s unclear when production would begin for the next season. Even the creator hasn’t spoken about the script yet. So it’s pretty hard to tell when the show would go into filming. But we can expect that the star cast might return to shoot Perry Mason Season 2 in the middle of summer.
