Martin Freeman, in an interview with Collider, said that they are few and far between, the discussions about Sherlock. Just because Mark Gattis and Steven Moffat, the writers, and Benedict Cumberbatch and I, are all lucky to be not only working on stuff that we like and are engaged in, but we know what Sherlock is.

Freeman said that the show is something extraordinary, and if there is something meaty and exciting, for Season 5, then I think we would all be open to that. He continued by saying that Sherlock always sounds a bit like an event. We did three episodes in every season. Although they were long episodes, they were 90-minute episodes. Normally, you are looking at 10 or eight episodes.
Freeman also said that we did comparatively few episodes, even though there was a lot of content. It always felt like an event, therefore if we do more, it has to be deserving of that. We couldn’t return with something quite good. It would have to feel very special. Sherlock was that kind of show.
