The show follows Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Stories -The Pagan Lord and The Empty Throne. It focuses on the biblical drama during the 9th-century England. Pagan Viking intruders have conquered Christian Saxon empires – minus one, King Alfred’s Wessex.
Every Season has covered two books of this series. Till now Six books are included. This means Season 4 will focus on the seventh and eighth part of the book series. The description for them goes –

A Jump Of Decade: Are We Going To See New Faces In Season 4?
The Pagan Lord, issued in 2013 and the next book for the series, leaps ahead a decade. Well, if this jump is taken in the show, we will undoubtedly see some new character or a younger version of a few characters.
Uhtred and Gisela’s children are anticipated for this change. We might see the Younger version of these characters. Moreover, the lead casts will return for Season 4. Therefore, we will see more of Alexander Dreymon as Uhtred. Eliza Butterworth as Aelswith. Emily Cox as Brida. Ian Hart as Beocca. Lastly, Toby Regbo as Aethelred will presumably return for Season 4.
