With its debut in 2009, James Cameron’s Avatar captured the eyes of the entire world. The movie claimed as a breakthrough in cinematic technology. Since then, the audience has been waiting for Avatar 2 to come up. Though the film got renewed for the next two movies just after the massive success of Avatar, its been a decade now and still the sequel is under development.
Avatar 2 has been delayed back again and again for so many reasons. The announcement for the first two sequels took place in 2010. At that time, the sequel was scheduled for 2014 release. However, the further addition of three more movies to the franchise and the requirement of some modern technologies for the sequels added to the delay.
First Glasses-Free 3D Movie
The first movie made extensive use of new motion capture filming techniques. Avatar was the first movie in the history of cinema to use stereoscopic filmmaking. At the time of its theatrical run, the film broke many box office records. Avatar also became the highest-grossing film of all time. The record has not been broken till now. (Avengers: Endgame may soon break this record)
In the past also, James Cameron has discussed his hopes to make glasses-free 3D possible in the future. Though in 2016, he disagreed to the rumours as the technology would not reach till the time. According to him, there are quite some possibilities that the film could feature that way. However, it is not entirely certain yet. If that happens, Avatar 2 will set its place as the first glasses-free 3D movie in film history.
Avatar 2: Cast Updates
After Oona Chaplin and Kate Winslet’s confirmation as the new entries for the sequel, some new cast members also added to the list. Cliff Curtis (Walking Dead) joined the sequel as Tonowari. Tonowari is the leader of the reef people clan of Metkayina. Star Trek: Discovery’s star Michelle Yeoh will feature as a human Doctor, Karina Mogue. In addition to that, Vin Diesel and David Thewlis also joined Avatar 2. However, their characters are yet a mystery to unravel.
Moreover, the audience will also see some child characters this time. Seven child actors signed the movie in September 2017, as per the reports. Jamie Flatters, Britain Dalton and Trinity Bliss will play Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri’s (Zoe Saldana) children. Filip Geljo, Bailey Bass and Duane Evans Jr. will feature as the members of Metkayina clan. Meanwhile Jack Champion will be the only one to perform live action. He will be the single human born on Pandora.
What Will Happen in Avatar 2?
Avatar 2 will feature a significant time lapse. Jake will now become the entirely Na’vi family man with his wife Neytiri and three kids. Though he will also achieve the designation of chieftain alongside Neytiri, who will become the high priestess of their clan. However, their entire journey will revolve around their children.
Producer, Jon Landau also confirmed that all the movies would act as the stand-alone movies, and the audience can watch them separately, without watching the previous ones. He also stated that the audience would have a visual and emotional journey that will come to its own conclusion.
When Will Avatar 2 Release?
Avatar 2 will release on December 18, 2020, according to the current schedule. The next three sequels are set to release in December 2023, December 2025 and December 202 respectively. However, the movie may get postpone further, if Cameron wants it to, as per the requirement. Till then, the audience is keeping their hopes pretty high for Avatar 2.
