Baylen Dupree recently opened up about one of the hardest moments in her Tourette’s journey during her appearance on the Howie Mandel Does Stuff podcast. The Baylen Out Loud shared that before COVID, her tics were actually very mild. But during the pandemic, her symptoms grew much worse and severe, which led her to seek more professional help.
But instead of helping her, Baylen shared a scarring incident with her neurologist. He took away her Tourette’s diagnosis because of the severity of her condition. She recalled the doctor telling her. “I have no idea what you have, but you don’t belong in society. You don’t belong in college. You shouldn’t get a job. You shouldn’t work. You shouldn’t drive.” He also added that Baylen would do nothing in life. This left her scarred and shaken. Baylen and her family later learned that he did not even specialize in Tourette’s.
But that unprofessional medical advice did not bring Baylen down. She remembered telling her mom through tears, “I’m going to college. I don’t care if I fail.” That determination pushed her forward. A few months later, specialists at the Mayo Clinic confirmed that she did, in fact, have Tourette’s syndrome. Her determination not to simply give up has now become an inspiration to countless people with Tourette’s. She now lives a dream life, with a reality show and a massive following.
