After battling colon cancer, Mel Schilling, best known as the dating coach on Married At First Sight Australia, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 24. In an emotional Instagram message, her husband, Gareth Brisbane, confirmed the news. The couple, who had a daughter named Madison, described Mel as the center of their family and a public figure.
In his tribute, Gareth explained that the public saw her as a reality TV star. To him and their daughter, she was just “our wee Melsie” – a devoted mother, inspiration, and soulmate. He also praised Mel’s extraordinary strength. He pointed out that, despite undergoing chemotherapy, she never complained and continued to show bravery, grace, empathy, and compassion. Surprisingly, throughout her treatment, she continued to record and never missed a day of work.
Mel took part in two seasons of Married At First Sight UK after first joining Married At First Sight Australia in 2019 during its sixth season. She announced her decision to leave in February, citing her health battle. Mel also said she needed to prioritize her family, following an incredible 12-season service. She revealed at the time that it was no longer possible to fly back and forth between the United Kingdom and Australia on a regular basis.
Her battle with cancer was really horrible. Doctors removed a tumor “the size of a lemon” after diagnosing Mel in December 2023. But in February 2024, they informed her that the cancer had spread to her lungs. While still working, she underwent 16 rounds of chemotherapy and was even scheduled to start a novel clinical trial designed for her gene type.
Sadly, she developed serious symptoms during Christmas. Testing later found that the cancer had spread to her brain, leaving her with no more options for therapy.
