We know that Victor went to Nate asking for his help; Victor also showed him all the evidence that proves that Ashland is a fraud. In addition, Nate became extra cautious when Nick Newman showed up at his door.
Nate’s girlfriend, Elena, told him that Nick is a man with a golden heart, so he became more sure that Nick wouldn’t be worried until there was something really bad. The foremost reason is that Ashland himself raised many red flags, which led to Nate doubting Ashland.

He will tell Nate that he’s a powerful man and he might be able to destroy his whole life. Locke will tell Nate to hold on to the private records and never say anything about it to Victoria. After Ashland’s continuous threats, Nate might start worrying about the life he has built with Elena, and it could affect them.
