Actor Charlie Suff, who recently joined EastEnders, has spoken volumes about his new role! Johnny returned in the wake of her mum’s fragile condition, given he was the second and closest son of Linda Carter. And get this, Charlie is the third actor to take on Johnny’s role on the BBC One soap. His arrival came with a big interview where newcomer Charlie Suff lifted the lid on the return of Johnny Carter. Johnny Carter arrived in 2013 alongside Linda and dad Mick Carter, with Sam Strike playing the role. Sam left in 2014, and the character made a comeback with actor Ted Reilly. The second stint lasted from 2016 to 2018. Now, Charlie’s Johnny returns after seven years in Manchester. Moreover, he’ll be thrown into a fight with Uncle Dean Wicks as he looks after his mum, Linda!

Charlie Suff caught the public eye as EastEnders buffs are curious to know more about Johnny Carter. Fans are in for a treat! Charlie Suff shared all the deets in a new interview shared with RadioTimes.com. 

Johnny has arrived back in the Square. What brought him home?

The newcomer said that the news of Linda’s broken and drunk phase reached Johnny in Manchester, prompting him to return. Added, “The family needs Johnny back home to steer the ship and get things back on track.”

What is his first impression of Linda and the state she’s in?

“He is devastated. It’s too much of a shock for him to understand the implications of Linda’s state,” Suff expressed. Additionally, the actor emphasised that Johnny initially grappled with the mess Linda was in on EastEnders. Because a lot of things have changed since he was last there, will he succeed? 

Has he ever seen his mum in this state before?

Linda’s current phase on EastEnders is a complete shocker for Johnny. He could feel this because he shared a close bond with his mum. Plus, Charlie also justified that Johnny had been shielded more than his older siblings. He revealed that Johnny had to steel himself “to face things and deal with them.”

How does Johnny react when he hears that Dean is back?

The EastEnders star replied, “He is shocked and totally furious.” He revealed that Johnny had moved past the “Dean situation” and didn’t expect Linda to deal with him anymore! Moreover, “He’ll do anything to protect his mum, particularly from Dean,” Stuff warned.

Charlie explained that Johnny was unsure how to deal with Dean initially as “he’s totally consumed by fury and rage.” And that Johnny hadn’t been thinking rationally. Suff clarified, “Dean has always been older than him, and Johnny has been a young boy in his eyes.” However, “Johnny has grown up since he’s been away, and he can handle Dean now,” he assured.

Has Johnny changed a lot since we last saw him?

The newbie focused on the fact that Johnny had always been super pampered because of being Linda’s closest son. But it’s high time Carter toughens up to “ deal with things that have happened to Linda since he’s been away.” Charlie declared, “The more he sees Linda alone, the more he knows he has to be in Walford to protect her.”

What has Johnny been doing in Manchester?

Suff described Johnny’s time in Manchester: “He has been partying a lot, studying to become a lawyer, exploring himself.” And that Johnny had been becoming what he was choosing to be. Additionally, he confessed about Johnny living freely outside Walford!

How does Johnny deal with Linda’s alcoholism?

Johnny couldn’t process Linda’s binge drinking at first. He tried to control and police her. Nevertheless, “He soon realises that it doesn’t work,” said Suff. So his character tried just to lend support to his mum on EastEnders. “For her to know that he’s got her back, no matter what, will hopefully give her the strength to change.”

How has Johnny dealt with the Mick tragedy?

The EastEnders star revealed that Johnny was away when he heard about Mick’s tragedy. And neither he nor Linda had been over him yet. Charlie elaborated, “ They have a lot to talk about and to emotionally understand about Mick with each other.” For Johnny, he explained it was important he came to terms with the fact that his dad wouldn’t return.

Suff expressed delight as it gave Johnny so much to explore and discover his brand new family. He also commented about his fun potential relationships with the Knights on EastEnders. Linda’s onscreen son explained that it would be a teething period, but both families would reconcile down the line. 

There’s a moment this week when Linda loses it in the café and starts screaming. What is Johnny’s reaction to that?

Charlie expressed, “He is completely flummoxed. He doesn’t understand what is going on at all.” He elaborated that Linda hadn’t given Johnny any closure about her ordeal on EastEnders. However, the scene at the cafe “ is a real shock to him, and Johnny realises something deeper is going on.”

Can you tease what’s coming up for Johnny?

The newcomer spilled that his character would meet many people he hadn’t seen for a long time. “Some he’s very happy to see, and some he isn’t,” he reacted. Nevertheless, Charlie announced Johnny’s return would be dramatic. Johnny wanted to show everyone “that he’s all grown up and not to be messed with.”

Have you had a warm welcome from your new colleagues?

The fresh face showered love for his new co-stars! He shared, “Everyone is so fun, friendly, and brilliant at what they do.” Added, “I felt totally swept up into the family straight away, and I felt so comfortable with everyone.”
