In the latest episode of Suddenly Amish, Bille Joe and Esmeralda are learning the practical side of Amish life, like sewing period pads. The cast was as shocked as fans. Turns out the Amish also shun modern feminine hygiene items, as they do with anything modern.
Suddenly Amish is all about six strangers learning to live the Amish life. They did struggle in the beginning, like washing clothes by hand or sleeping without any air-conditioning. Now it seems they are slowly learning to accept the changes. How does Bille Joe and Esmeralda take the news of having to sew menstrual pads? Keep reading for the full scoop.

In a recent discussion on Suddenly Amish, fans agreed on one thing – Matt has the creepiest facial expressions. One OP posted on Reddit how Matt’s expressions are terrifying when something doesn’t go his way. Fans first noticed the way he is in the episode when he goes on a date with Kendra. Emma interrupted the date that set Matt off. He called Emma “a little girl,” and now fans can’t unsee it. Matt makes slightly terrifying faces whenever something upsets him, and the OP finds that extremely creepy. Fans also see his behavior as problematic.
Matt is a divorced dad of two, but he still came on the show. Fans pointed out whether he planned to bring his children to live the Amish life too, or if he did not care about them at all. Matt is irresponsible about anyone but himself. He thinks he doesn’t care about the repercussions of his actions. They proved their point by pointing out that he came back solely to make a move on Kendra and take her to a motel. He did not care that he was making her break the Amish rule as long as he got what he wanted.
In the latest episode of Suddenly Amish, the cast members learn to sew menstrual pads. Bille Joe and Esmeralda meet with Sarah in the barn, who is sitting with a sewing machine and some black clothes. Neither of them could believe their ears when Sarah said they would learn to make pads. Bille Joe has to confirm whether Sarah means period pads. Sarah explains that since they are learning to be Amish, they need to know how to make pads the traditional way.
Sarah also explains how the pads are made. She takes 4 layers of terry material and sews them together. It is made of a towel and fabric together. BJ and Esmeralda inspect the one Sarah makes for them and say that it looks durable. They also note that it is reusable. Later, they appear in a confessional and share what they really feel about it. BJ calls it “gross” at first.
Esmeralda asks whether anyone in the Amish uses tampons. Sarah states that some use it, but it’s not that common. Esmeralda later shares that the DIY menstrual pads are actually not as bad. They are organic, free of microplastics and harsh chemicals, and eco-friendly and sustainable. Given all the benefits, Esmeralda might stick with the Amish pads.
